ONE SELF PORTRAIT EVERY DAY in 2020 : 252

There are some works that have influenced me greatly and the “casual passers-by” series by Braco Dimitrijević is one of them.

It’s a series he started in 1971 (and is still ongoing) where he photographed random people he met in the street and make large scale prints which he would hang on billboards, sides of prominent building, museums etc.

The portrait I am holding up was taken at 7:21PM in Zagreb in 1971. (He titles his works with the time it was taken, the place and the year but not the day and month). I was probably three at the time and I wonder if the those two people are still around, it would be great to find them.

I went to a talk he gave at the Tate Modern in 2005 or 2006, after the talk there was wine and mingling. I wanted to invite him to the first Susak Expo. I don’t know why, maybe I was star struck, I went up to him, spoke a few words in Croatian and he seemed happy and surprised but then I couldn’t get myself to tell him about Susak Expo and I said “nice meeting you and goodbye”. I then went away, then wrote a note asking him if he wanted to take part in Susak Expo, went back to him and handed him the note and left. He seem very surprised and put the unread note in his pocket. Of course he never got in touch. What was I thinking?
