ONE SELF PORTRAIT EVERY DAY in 2020 : 153

In 2003 i was still working full time at Walker Books and I was looking at the phone list, an A4 sheet with about 120/130 names and extension numbers on it and and was trying to work out how many people I knew well, how many I vaguely knew and how many I didn’t know at all.

I decided I would try and get to know each person on the list. Each day I would pick two or three people from the list and ask them if they would like to have coffee with me during the lunch break. I started with the people I knew and once I had coffee with someone I would highlight them with a yellow highlighter.

I started with departments I knew well, Picture books, Non Fiction, Fiction and then I started working my way through departments where I knew a couple of people and could use them to help me invite the other people in the department (I’m thinking IT, Production, Copy editors, Foreign Rights).

There were departments like accounts where I didn’t know anybody. It felt a bit weird phoning someone in accounts, telling them about my project and wondering if two or three people would like to have coffee with me but they were up for it and we became friends which was quite handy because when I went freelance, for a while, my invoices got paid really quickly.

By the time it came to have coffee with senior management they were expecting me. I think I was one of the few people who knew everybody in the company, and when someone new joined the company I tried to meet them and have coffee with them.

Later I started a book were I recorded coffees I had with people. Ideally I wanted to record just one coffee per person because this was supposed not to be a record of my coffee drinking but a record of the different people I had coffee with. I have noticed that some people are officially recorded several time but I think it’s OK as long as there is a long period between them.

I have been a bit sloppy with this project (sometimes I forget about it for years) but as soon as things get back to normal I would like to start this again. I think that after this period of lockdown and virtual socialising having a non-virtual coffee and a conversation with someone will feel great.

I have gone through my four coffee books and listed the 431 official coffees so far (this took much longer than I expected). It was interesting to see all these people, some I haven’t seen for ages, some are no longer with us, some I don’t know who they are. I regret having recorded the people who drank my turkish coffee during performances in galleries as these are not really people I had a conversation with but maybe I was trying to up the numbers like our terrible government does. But when I start it again, from coffee number 432, I’ll do it properly.
