ONE SELF PORTRAIT EVERY DAY in 2020 : 82

I did my BA in Fine Art at Reading University from 1987 to 1991. I remember a crit early on where my work was dismissed as being SELF-INDULGENT by one of the tutors. I can’t remember what the work was, I’m pretty sure it was quite shit and most probably self-indulgent but what confused me was the fact that making art that was self indulgent was something perceived to be wrong and to be dismissed and that I should try and make work that wasn’t self-indulgent. Until then, I thought that art was supposed to be self-indulgent: produced by the self to express the self. I thought that the one thing an artist could or should express was the self. Anyway, that was before I realised that tutors and artists talked bollocks.
