ONE SELF PORTRAIT EVERY DAY in 2020 : 261
I never got into East Enders, I must have watched it by mistake a few times but apart from recognising the theme tune and having a vague idea of what it’s about I know nothing about it. In 2005, my friend John Hughes was going to give a talk entitled “Whatever happened to Phil Mitchel? The downfall of a personal hero” in a pub but couldn’t get the time off work. I said “I’ll do it”. “What?” “I’ll give the talk about Phil Mitchel for you”. I quite liked the idea of giving a talk about something I knew nothing about to people who knew more than me. I think it went quite well. There were about 20 slides and he gave me text to go with each slide. I went quite slowly so that there wouldn’t be much time left for questions and I think I got away with the questions by saying”that’s a really good question” and then opened it up for debate. I love the instructions he added in pen: “1. SHOUT 2. WAVE HANDS 3. GET EXCITED BY IMAGES. Energy + aggression at times”. And then, maybe so to make me passionate about Phil Mitchel “Phil Mitchel is Inter Milan striker!”
